Assessing Natural Attenuation in AMD Contaminated Aquifers – “The Integrative Dual Isotope Approach”

چکیده

Completely separated sulfur isotope signature frequency distributions for sedimentary sulfide and coexisting inorganic sulfate proved the field scale hydrochemical dominance of bacterial sulfate reduction and thus a strong overall natural attenuation potential of the aquifer section. Consequently, a significant improvement of the water quality and an eventually complete attenuation of the acid mine drainage contamination can be expected from a long term perspective.

Rapid Benzene Degradation in Methanogenic Sediments from a Petroleum-Contaminated Aquifer

In methanogenic sediments from a petroleum-contaminated aquifer, [14C]benzene was converted to 14CH4 and 14CO2 without an apparent lag. Phenol, acetate, and propionate were intermediates in benzene mineralization. These results suggest that alternative electron acceptors need not be available for there to be significant natural attenuation of benzene in some petroleum-contaminated aquifers.

Biodegradation in contaminated aquifers: incorporating microbial/molecular methods.

In order to evaluate natural attenuation in contaminated aquifers, there has been a recent recognition that a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating microbial and molecular methods, is required. Observed decreases in contaminant mass and identified footprints of biogeochemical reactions are often used as evidence of intrinsic bioremediation, but characterizing the structure and function of t...

Ecology and Biogeography of Bacterial Communities Associated with Chloroethene-Contaminated Aquifers

Massive usage, along with careless handling, storage, spills, and leakages made chloroethenes (CEs) one of the most abundant classes of groundwater contaminants. Anaerobic organohalide respiring bacteria (OHRB) can couple reductive dechlorination of CEs with energy conservation, a central microbial process in (enhanced) natural attenuation of CE-contaminated aquifers. Spatial variability of OHR...

Documentation of time-scales for onset of natural attenuation in an aquifer treated by a crude-oil recovery system.

A pipeline transporting crude-oil broke in a nature reserve in 2009 and spilled 5100 m(3) of oil that partly reached the aquifer and formed progressively a floating oil lens. Groundwater monitoring started immediately after the spill and crude-oil recovery by dual pump-and-skim technology was operated after oil lens formation. This study aimed at documenting the implementation of redox-specific...
